The most comprehensive quantum-mechanical theory of the potential barrier for electrons near the metal–vacuum interface for the ground state has been constructed in [5-9]. In this study, the electron structure of the surface of a metal has been investigated for the first time and the theory of the work function has been constructed based on a model with a uniform positive background of the lattice.
It has been shown that the work function is determined by two basic contributions. The first contribution is volumetric and results from the exchange-correlation interaction of electrons in the metal.
The second one is related to the double electric layer that is formed near the metal–vacuum interface due to charge separation.
